George Brennan had the best day of his driving career today when he won the Hambletonian and the Hambleltonian Oaks before a crowd of 20,000-plus yesterday at the Meadowlands.

Broad Bahn took command of the $1.5 million Hambletonian before the first quarter in :27.1 and held off his challengers from there to defeat Whiskey Tax by 3 1/4 lengths to pay $14.60 to win. The 1-6 exacta was worth $462.40.

The favored Manofmanymissions went offstride in the stretch and faded to eighth.

Driver John Campbell, returning from an injury, finished third with Opening Night to pay $6.40 to show. The 1-6-7 trifecta was worth $3,700.40. Opening Night is trained by Campbell’s brother Jim.

The winner was a $20,000 yearling purchase.

Brennan’s two victories brought his national total to 446 and the $1,025,000 he earned yesterday sent him into the lead in North America with $8,202,000 displacing Tim Tetrick in that category.

Brennan said of Broad Bahn “He was really relaxed and ready to go. I said to him as we took the lead, ‘I’ve done my job, it’s up to you now.’ ”

Bold and Fresh, a daughter of SJ’S Caviar, posted an upset in the $750,000 Oaks as she turned back the 2-5 Crys Dream, who finished third. Lady Rainbow finished in between those two to complete a 5-4 exacta that paid $354.80. The winner, driven by Brennan paid $51.40.

“She’s a nice little horse,” Brennan said.

Trainer Doug Miller added, “She’s a versatile filly and she loves to rally.” And that’s what she did in the stretch today.

Owner Donald Barting, of Timonium, Md., said, “I owned her sire and Miller picked her out for me at the sales.” The $375,000 winner’s share more that compensated him for his faith in the filly, who was a $40,000 yearling purchase.
